“The horse can do it, you can do it, so just do it!” My trainer yelled across the arena in exasperation., then emphasized, “the moment you arrive in his orbit, there is no longer TRY, only DO.”
“Indy doesn’t like mirror at the end of the arena,” I half mumbled in protest.
“That’s not a problem because YOU like mirrors,” and with that reframe, I had two options.
- Try: with the core belief Indy doesn’t like mirrors, he’s going to spook, prove myself right, reduce both our levels of confidence.
- Do: with the core belief, I like mirrors, Indy is going to follow my lead in liking mirrors, increase both our levels of confidence.
Often, all we need is a reframe to execute. Doing doesn’t equal perfection, it is about committing to excellence and setting a base line from which to improve.
Trying implies an experiment and leaves the door open for hesitation and gives us permission to fail instead of permission to succeed.
Let’s start doing that thing we said was were going to do!
